Glossary

Factored form of a quadratic function:

A quadratic function written in the form y equals a times the quantity x minus m times the quantity x minus n or f of x equals a times the quantity x minus m times the quantity x minus n, where a does not equal zero.

Quadratic function:

A function f whose value f of x, or y, at x is given by a quadratic polynomial.

Quadratic polynomial:

A second degree polynomial in which the highest degree of the variable(s) in its term(s) is represented by the exponent “2.”

Standard form of a quadratic function:

A quadratic function written in the form y equals a times x squared plus b times x plus c or f of x equals a times x squared plus b times x plus c, where a does not equal zero.

Vertex:

The vertex of a parabola is the maximum point or the minimum point of the curve. The general form for a vertex is (h, k).

Vertex form of a quadratic function:

A quadratic function written in the form y equals a times the quantity x minus h squared plus k or f of x equals a times the quantity x minus h squared plus k, with vertex (h, k) and where a does not equal zero.

Zeros:

The x-intercepts of the graph of a quadratic function.
