Glossary

Correlation Coefficient:

A measure of how well the regression line represents the data. It represents the percent of the data that is the closest to the regression curve (or curve of best fit).

Coefficient of Determination:

The proportion of the variance in the dependent variable that is predictable from the independent variable in the regression equation.

Regression Analysis:

Determines how well the curve fits the data by averaging how far each data point is from the estimated curve by analyzing the correlation coefficient and/or the coefficient of determination.

Regression Curve:

A curve fitted to a set of data that has been studied during regression analysis, the statistical process for estimating the relationships among variables.

Residual:

The difference between the given dependent data value and the predicted dependent data value (from regression equation line).

Residual Plot:

A graph that shows the residuals on the vertical axis and the independent variable on the horizontal axis. A residual is the difference between the given dependent data value and the predicted dependent data value (from regression curve).

Scatterplot:

A graph containing scattered points that show the relationship between two sets of data or variables.
